Right Fit Books

Reading books that "fit" us well helps us to grow as readers. A right fit book is a book that interests the reader, fits the reader's purpose for reading and is not too hard, or too easy. A just right book is challenging without being frustrating.

Purpose: Readers should ask themselves why they are reading a book. Are they reading for entertainment? Research for a school project? A book report? Readers should be sure that the book they are choosing fits their purpose for reading.

Interest: Readers should make sure that they books that they select are interesting to them. If not, they should keep looking. There are a lot of choices when it comes to selecting a book. When readers select one that interests them, they are able to stick with it until the end.

Difficulty: Readers should make sure that they book they are choosing is at their reading level. If it is too hard, they are likely to get frustrated and give up. If it is too easy, they might get bored, and won't be challenged to grow as a reader. If readers know their Lexile measure or Guided Reading Level, they can visit lexile.com or Scholastic Book Wizard to find out if a book is at their reading level. Students who don't know their reading level can check with their teacher, or alternatively, they can preview a page in a book. If readers have trouble with 5 or more words on a page, the book is likely to cause frustration.
